HCP President & CEO Kathy Febraio, CAE Responds to New York Times Article "How a Home Health Aide Spends her Sunday"

To the Editor,

I read with great interest, empathy and compassion the Alix Strauss’ article, How a Home Health Aide Spends her Sunday. While other providers in the health care continuum continue to garner the lion’s share of resources and coverage related to COVID-19, home care workers and their employers are the oft forgotten, severely under resourced and underrepresented, but ESSENTIAL component of the continuum.

This was the case prior to the pandemic, with the industry having seen rate cuts, contracting limits and other detrimental State policies impacting critical access to home care services-- the care setting of choice for those in need of long term care.  Moreover, it is often less expensive and safer than congregate care settings.

Workers like Keisha Gourdet sorely deserve recognition and support for their heroism under less than ideal circumstances. They are the heart and soul of the industry. Policy makers must ensure serious financial support, access to adequate PPE and early COVID vaccinations for the industry.
